Some Nifty features

 Back to MiserMail page

Though spam removal features are most powerful, MiserMail is otherwise
designed to be simple and easy to operate. Here are some features
besides spam removal that you might not expect in a simple program,
likely missing in your current program:

Dial-up modem connections

MiserMail does not require that you use a dial-up modem connection to
your ISP. It will work with DSL, for instance. But there are several
conveniences for those using dial-up connections. Most important,
MiserMail will connect and disconnect with each email operation if you
so choose. This make ISPs happy and protects your computer from
invasion when you don't need to be connected to the internet.

You can set up three icons to start MiserMail in different ways: One
to start MiserMail normally, one to check for messages periodically in
the background from the Start Bar and optionally pop up when messages
are received, and one used just as a convenient way to connect to the
internet: It will check for mail one time, close, and leave you
 connected for other purposes.

Maintaining mail at two locations

If you collect mail to your same email address at two locations, you
can set each location to forward all messages to the other location so
that all mail is at both locations. Though any email program will let
you forward all mail, you would also be forwarding all your spam.
MiserMail will only forward the legitimate mail.

Prefix subjects of received mail

You can set MiserMail to notice various things about incoming mail and
add characters to the beginnings of subjects. You can quickly identify
certain mail, also collapse the message list, make a broadcast list,
compile or send all similar mail to an address in one operation.

Besides email addresses, phrases in subjects and messages, this
feature can notice new senders, so that you can immediately know if a
received message is from someone new.

Email lists

If you have a web site with different contact forms for different
product lines, MiserMail can compile a separate email list for each.
It does this via the "Make address file" selection, electing to search
on Subject lines. Mail collected from different POP3 accounts is also
 identified in the Subject line.

Change any message

You can pull up any message, sent, received, or just parked in the
message list, add or revise something and replace the edited copy with
the original or make it a new message. Great for notating messages
from sales contacts, also for composing messages or other documents
 over time.

Message categories

MiserMail lets you assign a category to any message. Several features
let you do this for groups of messages, including address, subject, or
 message searches.

Categories can be used for a variety of purposes: collapsing message
lists to view just one category, creating address lists, moving
messages to other folders, deleting, etc.

Send multiple messages to one address

You can send all messages in a certain category to a single recipient.
Options to send sent, received, or both types of messages. Options to
disclose original correspondent, include attachments. Option to
compile into one file for preliminary review or sending as an
attachment (for instance a teacher sending a group of messages to
 students in a broadcast).

Automated receipts

Do you have a loved-one in a far-away place who worries when you don't
reply to their messages for a week? Just elect to send automated
receipts in their address book entry. Then, whenever you collect a
message from them, they will automatically get a short message
repeating their "Subject" line, also with the date and time. They will
know you are alive, well, and having such a good time that it might
take a while for your reply! And they can stop worrying. Lots of
business situations where this feature comes in handy too, like
improved customer service. Ask your customers if they would like email
receipts. If so, just mark it in their address book entry.

MiserMail also includes the standard "request receipt" feature, which
allows you to request receipts from recipients. You can send automatic
 requests for specified recipients.

Easy encryption

Most email programs provide encryption, usually in a technically
difficult way requiring special "keys" and 3rd party "authorizing"
parties. Suppose you don't want that hassle, or your recipient is not
technically oriented? MiserMail does not use special keys. After
typing your message, simply select "Encrypt" and enter a password you
make up. You'll see the message you typed change into mailable
"garbage characters" using a powerful encryption method. You can then
add to the message so that only parts are encrypted. The recipient
needs only to select "Decrypt" and enter the same password to see the
"garbage characters" change back into your text. The message remains
encrypted on your and the recipient's disks where it cannot be
deciphered without the password. But you can select "Decrypt" to read
it anytime. You do not need to send encrypted messages, but can use
MiserMail just to encrypt/decrypt for yourself, or for sending at a
 future date.

Backups

MiserMail backs up your messages and settings every day automatically
in the background, saving these in 7 separate daily folders. It also
backs up your messages in "real-time", as they are sent or received. A
convenient "Restore backup" button lets you review the seven backups
to see which one has the most messages, and uses the "real-time"
backups to restore everything up to and including the most recent
message. A standard "manual backup" is also available.

Advanced features

MiserMail contains "advanced features" which apply to few users. These
are set up in your own configuration file so that the main program
remains uncluttered and less confusing. For instance, the REPLYFILE
feature lets you set up just about any type of automated reply,
including "out-of-office" replies. You can have automatic replies sent
to multiple email addresses in response to a received message from a
certain sender or containing a unique phrase. Numbers in your reply
can increment each time it is sent. For instance, you might send this
reply with the two numbers increasing each time:

"We have received the below email containing an invoice 6 times. But
we returned this product and were told the charges were canceled.
Please check your records and discontinue mailing this invoice. We
have sent you this notice 2 times."

For computer people

Everything in MiserMail is purposely stored in plain-text format. This
includes message lists, address book, configuration, and all lists
including spam lists. This lets you load files into text editors,
word-processors, spread sheets, conversion programs, etc. to do lots
of special things. Programmers can easily add their own special
utilities to work with MiserMail. (Note that web programmers are not
among the recommended user profiles because Java code is disabled and
they are likely to receive a high percentage of legitimate
 all-HTML messages.)
